If you own a home in Kerala, and you are getting an electricity bill above 4,000 every couple of months, then most probably think about installing solar panels. If it’s so, then this is the right time. Why?

Let’s discuss step by step how to choose the right solar system for your home.

The very first thing you need to do is find your average electricity consumption. Go through your last 6 electricity bills, there you can find the units of electricity you consumed throughout the billing period.

Let’s take the last electricity bill. Assume you consumed 1000 units in that billing period, that is 60 days.

Daily consumption is 1000/60 = 16.6 units.

The basic thing you need to know before going solar in Kerala is, 1KWp Solar Panels produce on average 4 units of electricity per day. (This value is count of yearly average)

So your requirement is about 17 units per day. So you need a minimum 4KWp Solar Panels. But we always suggest you to go for 20% extra units. So it’s always better to install 5KWp Solar Panels.

Next step is to make sure that you have a 100 Sq Feet Shade free area per KW solar installation. So you need a 500 Sq feet area to install a 5KW On grid solar plant on your roof.

Further proceed with the paperwork to install the solar plant. It involves documentation in Pm suryaghar website, & KSEB. After getting feasibility from KSEB Section, you can register your solar plant with KSEB. Solar installation is the next step.

What should you know before installing a grid-tied solar system at your home?

  1. Choose the best Solar Panels.
Look for high-efficiency panels that convert more sunlight into electricity, which is especially important if you have limited roof space. Go for Tier-1 Solar Panel Brands. Understand the Warranty terms of the manufacturer.

  2. The right On Grid Inverter
Basically there are mainly two technologies in On Grid Inverters; String Inverter & Micro Inverter.

Multiple solar panels are connected in series (a “string”), and the combined DC electricity is sent to a single inverter that converts it to AC electricity. This is a String inverter. It’s less expensive than micro inverters. The disadvantage with this system is If the inverter fails, the entire system goes down until it is repaired or replaced.

While in the micro inverter system, there you can see each solar panel has its own small inverter mounted directly on or near the panel, converting DC to AC at the panel level. Generally it’s expensive initially due to the need for more inverters, but can offer better long-term performance and efficiency.

  3. Balance of System
Mounting Systems: Each roof is different, so ensure you have the right mounting setup for your roof type. Also go for Galvanized Iron or Aluminum Structure.

Wiring and Cabling: Use high-quality, durable wiring and cabling to connect your solar panels to the inverter and the electrical grid.

Installation Quality: Work with certified and experienced installers who understand local codes and standards to ensure the system is installed correctly and safely.

  4. Reputation and Experience of the Solar Installer
Choose a reputable and experienced solar installer with good reviews and a solid track record.

Subsidy for On Grid Solar Installation

The Indian government is now providing subsidies for homeowners to install On Grid Solar power plants. There is a financial support of 78,000 for a 3KW On Grid installation. You will get the same subsidy for systems above 3kw and it’s up to 10kw.
